Secret Life of the Desert

Episode 1 “Twin Sisters and Wallula Gap”

The series starts with a trip to Twin Sisters, a geologic formation in the Wallula Gap area, located in Southeast Washington. In this episode, the narrator, Mike Denny, introduces the “Deserts of the Pacific Northwest”, then the exploration begins. Items discovered within this area are; a very large Pacific Gopher snake, Sagebrush Lizards, exotic desert plants, incredible geology, and many other treasures from the area.

Episode 2 “Burnt River Canyon and Malheur City”

Take a ride through the Burnt River Canyon, a high desert area filled with Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany and talus slopes providing shelter for creatures by the heat of the day. As the trip progresses, we make our way to Malheur City, a ghost town in a spectacular shrub-steppe area filled with a tremendous assortment of native plants. That evening, near an old cemetery, they come across many scorpions that fluoresce under a UV light.

Episode 4 “Central Washington: Soap Lake and Moses Coulee Area”

In this episode, we take you to the heart of Washington State’s high desert. Much of this area is labeled as the “Scablands”, but Mike reveals that there is much more to this area despite its title. This overlooked area contains precious native plants, geology, and animals including Snowy Owls.

Episode 5 “Central Oregon: Cabin Lake and Fort Rock”

There is a very special area where hundreds of shrub-steppe obligate species and Ponderosa Pine Forest obligate species gather. This little-known and unique location is called Cabin Lake and offers incredible wildlife viewing. After filming great numbers of wildlife at Cabin Lake we explore a unique geological feature located in Central Oregon called Fort Rock.

Thunder eggs, Chukar, and many other treasures from these areas are revealed. We also take a close look at how this landscape is losing its native plant species to invasive plants such as Ventenata.

Episode 7 “Skyrocket Hills: Southeast Washington”

This interesting area deserves our attention as it is quickly turning into a man-made desert. Despite the lack of plant diversity, there are a few plants and animals that are still trying to live there, but who knows for how much longer. Some of the treasures that were filmed in this area includes some amazing raptors (including a Long-eared Owl) and some small pockets of incredible native plants.

Episode 8 “Pueblo Mountains and Malhuer National Wildlife Refuge—Part 1”

The Pueblo Mountains sit in the Southeast corner of Oregon and hold incredible numbers of reptiles, jackrabbits, scorpions, incredible and beautiful desert plants, and many other incredible species. We begin this episode at Fields Station, Oregon, where we were able to film migrating birds that were escaping a storm. We then moved south to the Pueblo Mountains and filmed some fascinating species including, horned, leopard, and long-nosed lizards.
